What slows you down?
My dog bit my finger yesterday – not like a little love nibble – a full-on skin shredding bite. I had to bind up my index finger in a lovely band aid, which really handicapped my typing ability.
It was frustrating to hit the wrong keys, and I finally gave up. But it got me thinking about all the other things that mess up my writing time. Some of them are unavoidable (kids, barf, meetings). Some are things that I allow to effect me (discouragement, writer’s block, television).
What stumbling blocks do you put in your path and what do you do to get around them?
I’ve been lucky enough to meet a couple of really incredible people – who also happen to be awesome writers – and they have been excellent motivators. Thanks for all your positive thoughts and encouragement!

Ouch! Skin shredding dog bite? That’s awful. I have trouble when it comes to getting tired – hearing a bath with foamy soaps call my name instead of the laptop. Or just getting all of the chores done – vaccuuming, lunchboxes, etc. I feel your pain here but glad you’re finding encouragement around you:)

@Lindsay: Oh! Bubble baths with lovely scented water and a good book. Best. Thing. Ever.

Usually it’s just the stuff of daily life that slows me down, chores, errands, family responsibilities. I just try to stay on top of things and not let them accumulate. My family pitches in a lot too, so that helps!

I’m not a desk jockey. I get restless. I once had a home office, but was almost never in it. I have a netbook I can use while sitting on the couch with the TV on–but even that only works for so long. So now I have a smartphone, an Android, on which I can write, edit, and convert voice to text. I can work anywhere. Problem solved.

When I’m feeling down, that’s a roadblock to writing.
